Gift of Learning

We all know the old saying, “Practice makes perfect!” That is certainly so with learning a musical instrument and becoming proficient. Musical instruction, therefore, is essential.  But what does it cost to learn to play an instrument?

Piano lessons can cost $50 per half hour, the same for violin. Drum lessons average $60 per hour while trumpet lessons average $65 per hour.  There are many variables to consider that impact cost: online vs. in person; private vs. group lessons; and the experience and expertise of the instructor.

And of course, you don’t master an instrument with a few lessons.  It can take months, years, even, to become proficient.  Many young, aspiring musicians just cannot afford this investment. Here’s how If Not for Music helps.

Through donations and our strategic partnerships with individual teachers, music schools, and school districts we secure blocks of lessons for a wide range of instruments and make them available to deserving musicians. This way, their focus is on learning the instrument, not on how to pay for instruction.

Music Is…

“Music is life. From a young age. I remember really loving music. I have a vague memory of my parents putting an old stereo in my bedroom and finding a classical music station and listening to it for hours. Sometime around the second or third grade, the middle school concert band did a performance and I wanted to play the flute after that…. In college, I began playing the guitar and realized that I want my voice to be heard. I loved singing. I was always involved in choruses too, and what music gave me in my youth and even into my adulthood was the ability to travel, the ability to meet people, and to find a community.”

“Music is a key; It can open up even the most tightly closed heart. It can bridge language barriers, communication barriers. It can make you laugh, make you cry, make you think. It can connect with those innermost feelings and it's proven to have obviously healing power. That's incredible when you think about that… A painter paints pictures on a canvas for the visual enjoyment, and musicians painted pictures in silence to stir emotion.”
