Music Instruction Gets Underway at Community Youth Center

The Gift of Learning is a major Mission area of If Not for Music. We took a big step forward this May when music instruction began for students at the Kennett Garage Community and Youth Center in Kennett Square, PA.  If Not for Music established a relationship with the Center in February 2025 when we donated $2500 worth of musical instruments to them. In May, violin lessons began for one student and are about to get underway for another three. The instructor was secured through Greensleeves Music in West Chester, owned by Ben Green, a member of our President’s Advisory Council.

Social science data provides robust evidence of the benefits of music education to adolescents.  Improved self-esteem, academic achievement, higher SAT scores, reduced depression and anxiety, enhanced team building, and improved cognitive functioning are just some of the benefits realized by playing music.

Music lessons can be expensive, though, and average $70/hour in the US.  This is where we come in. It is generally recommended that lessons continue for 6 months for the student and teacher to assess progress, motivation, and desire to continue.  We commit to 6 months for all beginning students. But this takes money.  Please help us give the Gift of Learning to aspiring musicians.  Many cannot pursue their own musical journey if we do not support their learning.
